Getting the courage to travel - There is no time like the present

Getting the courage to travel - There is no time like the present

Do you ever go online and see people you’ve never met living your life? Not in a stolen identity kind of way (if it is, now is a great time to phone the police), but in more of an 'I wish that was me’ kind of way.

We get it. Instagram is a constant stream of travel bloggers who always look like they’re on top of the world and not coming down, or back home, any time soon. As people who love indulging in new cultures, living outside of the mundane life that’s doing everything possible to consume us, we get it.

Seeing people live the way you want to can be discouraging, especially when you see no clear route to embarking on your own adventure. Despite what you might believe, the only thing holding you back from travelling the world is you. But, luckily, we can help you with that.

I have no money!

Step one is to find the money. Counter to what you might think, it doesn’t have to be a lot. Travelling cheap is easier than many people think, with hostels, couchsurfing, cheap food, and the ability to live out of a tiny suitcase. If you’d like to live a little more on the luxurious side, saving isn’t impossible. Skipping that takeaway, taking advantage of discounts, and living like a hermit from time to time adds up.

However, in today’s digital age, the job-save-quit-travel-repeat cycle is easily broken. There are more ways than ever to work abroad - freelancing, bartending, online teaching, TEFL courses -  the list goes on. Combining work and travel is an excellent way to turn a holiday into a long-lasting adventure, and it also leads us to our next problem.

I can’t quit my job!

Yes, you can. We believe in you! Or, you could take a sabbatical. Even if you’re new to a job, you can still leave and add the experience to your CV. If you got the job once, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to get another in the future. And, with every month that goes by on the job, it gets harder to quit. All the while, you’re missing out on valuable life experiences abroad that employers love. The sooner you make your decision, the better.

I can’t throw away my degree!

Who said anything about throwing £27,000 away? Not us. Degrees don’t go bad or disappear. It’ll be waiting for you when you’re ready to use it. But if you’re passionate about finding work within your degree, plenty of opportunities exist across the world, you just need to look for them.

I can’t leave my family!

They’ll miss you but, thankfully, they’re just a FaceTime away. They’ll be here when you get back. And at Christmas. And on birthdays. In fact, whenever else you visit.

I can’t leave my significant other!

Take them with you! Who better to travel with? You have your whole lives to settle down and think about mortgages, car insurance, and vacuum cleaners. The time to travel is now, before you get bogged down. And if your partner can’t accompany you, or if you/they don’t want to, it doesn’t have to be the end. Long-distance relationships aren’t as hard as they used to be with the technology available today.

No matter what’s holding you back from travelling the world, know that there is likely someone who has been in the same situation as you and overcome it. Be it money, work, or fear. But something we can be certain of is if you love travelling, getting up and going is something you won’t regret, so don’t wait.
